4 Things to Do When You've Locked Your Keys in Your Car

If you've locked your keys in your car, then you might not be sure what to do next. If you don't carry a spare set with you, then you need to find a way to get into the vehicle to retrieve them.

The following tips will help.

1. Check the Car Is Locked

While you might assume that you locked up your car when you left it, this might not be the case. If your keys are inside the vehicle, then there is a chance that you didn't lock it after all. So, try all your doors. If you're lucky, one of them will open.

2. Look for Access Points

Even if your doors are locked, you might be able to get into your car to retrieve your keys through other access points. For example, if you left one of your windows open, then you might be able to reach into the car to pick up the keys or to unlock a door from the inside.

Don't forget about your boot. If you can open a boot, you can usually get into the car. You might need to move your seats or crawl over them, but at least you'll get inside.

3. Work Out if You Have an Accessible Spare Key

If you don't have any luck getting into your car through its doors, windows or boot, then have a quick think about spares. If you have spare keys, then they will get you into your car.

If you have a spare key at home and you aren't too far away, then you could simply call a cab or ask a friend for a lift to pick up the key. Or, if someone is at home, they could bring the key over.

4. Call Out a Local Locksmith

If you don't have an extra key or can't easily get hold of a spare, then the fastest way to solve your problem is to contact a local locksmith. They will be able to open your car for you.

If you do call out a locksmith, then it's worth talking to them about getting some spare keys if you don't currently have any. Even if you have a set at home, it might be worth asking your locksmith to make you another set that you can carry with you when you're out and about. This might help you avoid future problems.
